Calvin Elam was born in Spokane, WA, on July 12, 1913, to Otis and Stella Elam. The family lived in Leavenworth for the first nine years of his life, then moved to Wenatchee where he finished his school years, graduating from Wenatchee High School in 1934. After graduation, he went to work for Great Northern Railroad in Wenatchee. Cal later went on to an apprentice program in Spokane to become a machinist. In 1940, he met Lorene Kirk, the love of his life. They were married in 1942 and made their home in Wenatchee. Cal was in the Army from 1944 to 1946 and, upon returning home from Europe, went back to work for the railroad in the electric shop located in the Wenatchee Appleyard. When the shop was closed in Wenatchee, he transferred to Hillyard in Spokane where he worked for the next 20 years and traveled between Spokane and Wenatchee on his days off before retiring in 1975. During all those years, Cal and Lorene maintained their home in Wenatchee.
Cal was an active member of the Grange for 25 years, beginning in the West Wenatchee Grange before recently transferring to the Beacon Hill Grange. He was also active in the RSVP Volunteer program. Cal enjoyed traveling with Lorene as well as working in his yard and garden. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Calvin is survived by his loving wife, Lorene, at home in Wenatchee; a step-sister; two sisters-in-law; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
There will be a graveside service at the Wenatchee City Cemetery on Thursday, October 18, 2007, at 1:00 p.m.
