John "Monroe" Carmody passed away December 30, 2007, in Sun City, AZ, where he had resided for the last one and a half years. Monroe was the youngest son born to Ruth and Jim Carmody on February 15, 1919, in Nebraska. The family moved to Wenatchee in the 1920s, owning and operating Union Safeway until closing the grocery store in 1976 after 47 years in business. Monroe married Shirley Nelson in 1948 and they had 45 years together.
Monroe is survived by his son, John (Linda) Carmody of Seattle, two granddaughters, Tanya and Heather Carmody, and great-grandson, Dillon; daughter, Sharon (Ron) Johnson of Sun City, three grandchildren, Kelly Campbell, Robin Stoeck and Paul Campbell, and five great-grandchildren; daughter, Sandra (Charles) Miller of Scottsdale, AZ, three granddaughters, Suzanne Otto, Kris Sarrao and Lisa Francis, and four great-grandchildren. Monroe is also survived by his beloved sister Dorothy Webb of Malaga, WA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; and two brothers, Kenneth and Sterling Carmody.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2008, at Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Wenatchee Cemetery with military honors.
