Kilbourne Jane "Kib" Harris, a lifelong Entiat resident, died January 23, 2008, after an extended illness. She was born October 2, 1920, in Entiat, the daughter of Owen P. and A. Beatrice (Asher) Hastie. Kib graduated from Entiat High School in 1938, and received a BA in education from Eastern Washington College in 1942. She taught at Omak Elementary School and Entiat High School. On June 22, 1944, Kib married C. Meredith Harris and made their home in Entiat.
She was involved in the family businesses and served as officer and partner of C.A. Harris & Son, Inc., Mad River Orchard Co. and Harris Orchard Co. L.P. Kib was a volunteer with the Entiat Federated Church, Entiat Chamber, School District, Park Board and Historical Society. She was also a member of the Entiat Women's Club, the chapter her mother co-founded, and the District Education Loan Fund of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Kib served as the president of the Entiat Women's Club in 1946, president of the North Central District from 1964-66, and then as recording secretary at the state level. In 1967, the Entiat Women's Club honored her and Meredith as "Citizens of the Year". In 2004, she was recognized for 20 years of dedicated service to the Entiat Park Board. In 2005, Kib was awarded the Women's Club "2004 Citizen of the Year" and the Entiat Valley Chamber of Commerce "Member of the Year". Kib and Meredith were instrumental in their church's federation in 1944, and she was the church treasurer for nearly 40 years. When she retired from the Entiat Federated Church Board in 2004, she had served on the board of directors for over 50 years. Kib was one of the original directors and investors of the Entiat Development Corporation (EnDeCo). Kib was a member of the Gideon's International Auxiliary, Astral Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star (65 years), Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and active in Chelan County Republican politics.
Kib cared deeply about her family, church and community. She truly believed that people working together can accomplish significant change and improvements. When her health declined, Kib lived with Mike and Merry Bell at the Bell House and Home in Entiat, where she received excellent care and enjoyed their special friendship.
Survivors include her sister, Kathryn (Guilford) Zwight; daughters, Nancy (Uldis Ohaks) and Barbara (Jim Small); beloved grandson, Joshua Meredith Small; sisters-in-law, Ardis Harris, Kathleen (Gary) Weiher and Carole Harris; plus many cousins, nieces, nephews and cherished friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Harris. Services will be Saturday, February 2, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Entiat Federated Church. Visitation will be held Friday, February 1, from 1 to 7 p.m. at Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home, Wenatchee. If desired, memorials may be made to the Entiat Federated Church, Entiat Fire Department, or the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
