Mary Ann Doggett was born to Emily and Edward Connor on July 9, 1920, in Newcastle, Staffordshire, England and died December 26, 2007. She was raised and received her education in Newcastle, growing up during the Depression years which were very difficult in Europe. After leaving school, Mary worked as a maid until World War II broke out. During the war, she was employed by Rolls Royce Aircraft, machining engine parts. Mary was very proud of the fact that she worked on the engines for Spitfire fighters that defended England during the Battle of Britain. It was also during the war that she met her husband, Floyd Doggett, in England where he was serving with the Eighth Air Force of the US Army Air Corps. They were married June 23, 1945, in Newcastle. Mary came to the United States in March 1946 as a 'war bride' and became a US citizen on May 11, 1953. She and her husband lived in Seattle for 12 years, during which time their two sons were born. Mary worked for a short time at Boeing before the family moved to Wenatchee in 1957 where daughter Susan was born. She was employed by the Wenatchee School District for 20 years, primarily in the kitchen at Wenatchee High School where she was known as the "Little English Lady" and was a favorite of the students and faculty. Mary played in the Jolly Dollies bridge club for a number of years, which brought her great pleasure. She was a long time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she a member of the Alter Guild and St. Luke's Guild.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; and brothers, Harry in 1985, and Jim in 2000. She leaves her children, James (Alice) of Bend, OR, Richard (Vicki) of Moses Lake, WA, and Susan (Kelly) Cowlishaw of Wenatchee; three grandsons, Matthew (Mona) Doggett, Joshua Doggett and Dennis Cowlishaw; one granddaughter, Mary Cowlishaw; one great-grandson, Aaron Doggett and two great-granddaughters, Kennady and Samantha Doggett; two sisters, Nancy (William) Hand of Seattle and Winifred (Sidney) Ryles of Wenatchee; one brother, Edwin (Sylvia) Connor in England; and many nieces, nephews and friends who were dear to her.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 29, 2007, at 11 a.m., St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 428 King St., Wenatchee. Donations can be made to one of Mary's favorite charities, The American Cancer Society.
